The Barbados Museum & Historical Society is delighted to share the exciting news of the extension of its exhibition, LOOKA: Dismantling the Colonial Gaze, now running until February 26th, 2024. This impactful showcase is the result of a collaborative effort among five talented women artists specializing in photography: Risée Chaderton-Charles, Jalisa Marshall, Joy Maynard, Amber Newton, and Kia Redman.

Inspired by the Historic Postcard collection of the Barbados Museum & Historical Society, the artists present a collection of original works that go beyond the conventional narrative. They skillfully engage, challenge, and dismantle the historical ways in which Black bodies were objectified, dehumanized, and stereotyped through the colonial lens.

In this extended exhibition, these artists encourage viewers to reassess the power dynamics inherent in the creation and dissemination of images. By offering alternative visual languages of the Caribbean, they center Black agency and subjectivity, providing a fresh perspective on the rich history of the region.

For those eager to delve into this thought-provoking exhibition, or for more details, please reach out to Curator Natalie McGuire at info@barbmuse.org.bb or call +1 (246) 538 – 0201. Don't miss the chance to witness LOOKA: Dismantling the Colonial Gaze, now available for exploration until February 26th, 2024.
